Start with GPTZero if you want a free plan with a monthly allowance. Try Scribbr if you want a short check without an account. Originality.ai offers a one-time free allowance, while Winston offers a trial. We have not tested all these free options side by side, so this is a guide to choosing access, not a ranking of free-plan accuracy.

Originality.ai: a one-time free allowance
Originality’s pricing page now lists 10,000 words, or 100 credits, as a one-time free offer. This is not a daily refill. Check the scan limit and features in the live tool before you start. Our Originality.ai review shows eight correct answers out of eight on paid Pro, using the strict 0% AI Allowance setting. Its AID review score was 4.8/5. We have not shown that the free offer gives the same results.
GPTZero: check the allowance in your account
GPTZero’s current help page lists 10,000 free words per month and a 10,000-character limit per scan. Characters include more than words, so check both limits. Free access includes an overall Basic AI Scan and one Advanced Scan to try sentence highlighting. In our earlier test, the free account completed one pilot scan before access ran out. The other seven scans used Premium. The GPTZero review shows seven correct answers and one missed AI script, with a 4.6/5 AID review score. Those mixed-plan results do not prove how every current free scan will perform.
Winston AI: trial access has an end date
Winston lists 2,000 free credits for 14 days. This is a trial, so note the end date as well as the credit balance. Our Winston AI review used paid Essential and earned a 4.6/5 AID review score. It got seven documents clearly right and gave an unclear result for one AI script. We have not repeated that full test on the trial.
Scribbr and QuillBot: free options we have not tested
Scribbr says you can check up to 1,200 words at a time without an account. QuillBot’s help page says its AI detector is free for all users. We have not put either tool through our eight-document test. We cannot tell you which is more accurate from these access details alone.
Check the whole document, or label the excerpt
If your chapter is too long, a scan of its first page only tells you about that page. Label it as an excerpt and save exactly what you submitted. Do not average several passage scores and call that a full-document result. If you need the whole document checked, choose access that fits it.
- Check the word or character limit, remaining scans and any trial end date.
- Check whether you have permission to upload the text, especially student or client work.
- Save the exact text and settings you used.
- Read the explanation alongside the number.
- If the tool flags the text, look at drafts and notes and ask the writer to explain.
When paying may help
Consider paying if free limits stop you from checking full documents or doing regular work. Check how many documents your budget will cover. A bigger allowance does not guarantee a more accurate answer. Our comparison guide explains why one Originality credit and one Winston credit cover different amounts of text.
Frequently asked questions
Is a free detector always less accurate?
We have not shown that. Free and paid plans may differ in limits, settings or models. Our mostly paid tests cannot answer for every free plan.
Can I split a long document into smaller parts?
You can check separate passages if the tool allows it. Save their boundaries and treat each result as a passage result. Do not claim you tested the full document at once or combine the scores into a made-up percentage.
Can I use a free result to accuse a student?
No. A detector alone is not enough. See our teacher guide for a review process that includes the student’s explanation.
